Substance misuse amongst parents is a major issue for society, with a significant minority of children exposed to the consequences of this parental behaviour.

This course enables learners to become aware of the scope of the problem, and to build strategies for effective work with the children and young people.

  • Identifying the risks to the development and wellbeing of a child or young person being cared for by a parent with substance misuse issues
  • The theoretical models and definitions of substance misuse and how these issues impact on parenting abilities
  • Understanding the impact of parental substance misuse on children and young people
  • Knowing how to help children exposed to parental substance misuse to recover from trauma and develop resilience
  • Explaining the process of recovery from trauma Identifying interventions that promote recovery
  • Explaining how children and young people exposed to parental substance misuse can be helped to develop resilience

This course has been designed specifically for people who would like to learn more about this major issue for society. Whilst it provides focus for people working in Children's Services, it will also be useful to a wider audience of people who would like to know more about the scope of the problem and how to build strategies to help those affected.We can deliver this course either: online, as a webinar, or as a face-to-face programme.
