Foster carers have an important role to play in supporting children to be mentally healthy, and knowing the signs can help aid early appropriate intervention. This course enables learners to gain the necessary knowledge to understand mental health and identify signs and symptoms. It provides clear guidelines as to your role in supporting children with mental health difficulties.

This course will cover:

  • The signs that there may be a mental health problem for a looked after child
  • How to start conversations about mental health
  • How to deal with low to medium risk situations
  • How to respond to a crisis situation
  • Promoting resilience for looked after children to help support their mental health needs
This Supporting the Mental Health Needs of Looked After Children course has been designed specifically for people who want to know more about supporting looked after children who are experiencing mental health problems. Whilst it provides focus for people working in Children's Services, it will also be useful to a wider audience of people who work with vulnerable young people.
